At Downham Road, Edge Structures were commissioned to undertake the structural design for alterations and remedial work at a dilapidated Victorian bakery, located within the conservation area of the De Beauvoir town. The bakery had been subjected to fire damage, and due to poor guttering the roof was found to be in a generally poor state.
Edge Structures undertook a complete investigation of the existing roof structure including the historic trusses. The main trusses were badly damaged by wet rot and Edge Structures designed remedial works to be carried out that allowed the end of the truss to be replaced keeping the existing joints in place. The investigation of the roof structure facilitated the alteration of one of the trusses to provide greater headroom in the new mezzanine space without the need for complicated temporary works and propping. All the structural alterations were carried out in a sympathetic manner that allowed the architectural vision to be implemented.
